Which saddle is suitable for a horse with high withers?
The saddle needs a gullet with long sides so that the tips (ends of the gullet) don't put pressure on the sensitive nerve pathways to the left and right of the withers (cranial nerve 11). The longer gullet also ensures that the saddle sits more securely and doesn't tip over. It's also very important that the gullet is optimally adjusted. Amerigo and Albion, for example, offer saddles with long gullets.
The saddle needs sufficient panel volume to ensure the center of gravity is balanced and not become back-heavy. This means that the panels should be designed with "sufficient volume" from the start, so the saddler can easily fill them with plenty of wool without overstuffing. Prestige, Erreplus, Kentaur, and Amerigo, for example, offer saddles with +2 or +4 panels.
For horses with atrophied (wasting) trapezius muscles, it is helpful to use a saddle that also has wedge panelsat the front . For example, Albion or Dresch.
If you don't have the money for a new saddle right now, you can try to limit the damage by using a correction pad . It's also helpful to use a pad on horses that are still developing, simulating any missing muscles. We highly recommend the XH Ultra Pad from Christ, which was specially designed for horses with high withers. You can also find it in our shop! If necessary, you can also borrow a test pad for 14 days to see if your horse can handle it.
